GPS Students Gain Real-World Financial Knowledge

GILBERT, Ariz. (June 29, 2026) — Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) awarded a record 1,236 graduating seniors the Arizona State Seal of Personal Finance following the 2025-2026 school year. To earn the Seal of Personal Finance, students demonstrate financial literacy and understand how to manage money effectively in adulthood. Over the past four academic years, 552% more GPS students have graduated with the seal, from 224 in 2023 to 1,236 this year.
"This is one of the most important things students learn in school because these are skills they will use for the rest of their lives," said Woody Hodges, GPS Social Studies Coordinator. "We built benchmarks into our standard classroom pacing so we could turn economic theory into practical life choices that protect and empower our students."
Through a dedicated learning unit, high school seniors focus entirely on the everyday financial decisions they will face as adults. Students analyze the long-term impact of credit card debt, evaluate the true costs of car loans, calculate compounding interest, and create personal budgets. They also apply these concepts through a 10- to 12-week stock market simulation to learn about investing and portfolio diversification. The coursework encourages critical thinking around evaluating consumer debt, insurance options, and the lifetime return on investment of higher education.
To earn the Seal of Personal Finance, seniors must meet specific academic and practical achievements, including:
- Maintaining an overall 3.0 GPA or higher across all high school social studies coursework,
- Passing a financial literacy exam through state-approved programs,
- Completing the personal finance curriculum with a grade of B or better,
- Successfully navigate stock market simulations, and
- Completing an Education and Career Action Plan and a FAFSA application.
"When you teach a student how borrowing money on a credit card can cost them thousands in interest, or how a retirement match doubles their money, you change their adult trajectory," Hodges added. "Seeing this scale to over 1,200 students proves our classrooms are delivering tangible, real-world value to our families."
This expansion follows a deliberate effort by district leadership to ensure every student has a clear pathway to financial literacy. Rather than requiring students to navigate external applications or attend after-school programs, GPS integrated 75% of the state seal benchmarks directly into the standard Economics curriculum. Because Economics is offered at all GPS high schools and required for graduation, GPS has intentionally created more opportunities for all seniors to learn how wealth management works in the real world.
Gilbert Public Schools is committed to creating opportunities and pathways to prepare students for their future. For more information about the Seal of Personal Finance, including details on all the diploma seals offered at GPS, visit GilbertSchools.net/DiplomaSeals.
