(Gilbert, Arizona) – Gilbert High School students who graduate in May 2017 will have a double reason to celebrate: they will be the 100th graduating class.

With a series of spectacular and fun events, Gilbert High School officially kicked off the celebrations to highlight the milestone, which will be reached next year.

Events included a carnival on Thursday, a parade and a football game on Friday, and the Homecoming dance on Saturday.

The parade had the participation of students involved in ROTC, the marching band, cheerleading, and it included class and club floats.

Gilbert Public Schools Superintendent Christina Kishimoto attended Friday’s events along Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels, School Board President Lily Tram and Board Clerk Jill Humpherys.

On Friday, Mayor Daniels issued a proclamation to declare September 16, 2016 as “Gilbert High School Day.”

Also in attendance was Geraldine "Jerry" Johnson Emmett, who at 102-years-old is the oldest living Gilbert High School graduate.

Gilbert High principal Christopher Stroud said the school will hold other events throughout the school year, particularly as graduation day approaches.

The school is the oldest in the Gilbert Public School district, and it currently has an enrollment of 2,380 students.

Friday’s celebration reached its highest point when the Gilbert Tigers, the school’s varsity football team, obtained a victory over the Westwood Warriors, 47-20.
