2014-2015

AFJROTC is leadership elective for Gilbert high school students. The fourth year is available

in schools that have ninth through twelfth grade. The curriculum includes Aerospace Science

(AS), Leadership Education (LE) and Wellness/Physical Training. All students will be given credit towards graduation for successful completion of the AFJROTC program per the Air Force School Agreement. Each academic course must consist of an AS component, an LE component, and a Wellness component.  Two years of AFJROTC at GHS will result in the student’s PE credit toward graduation.

Aerospace Science (AS)

AS acquaints students with the elements of aerospace and the aerospace environment. It

introduces them to the principles of aircraft flight and navigation, the history of aviation,

development of air power, contemporary aviation, human requirements of flight, cultural and

global awareness, geography, the space environment, space programs, space technology, rocketry,

propulsion, the aerospace industry, and survival.

Leadership Education (LE)

LE is the portion of the AFJROTC curriculum that develops leadership skills and acquaints

students with the practical application of life skills. The leadership education curriculum

emphasizes discipline, responsibility, leadership, followership, citizenship, customs and courtesies,

cadet corps activities, study habits, time management, communication skills, career opportunities,

life skills, financial literacy, management skills, and drill and ceremonies.

Wellness Program

Wellness is an official and integral part of the AFJROTC program. The objective of

the Wellness Program is to motivate cadets to lead healthy, active lifestyles beyond program

requirements and into their adult lives. Gilbert High School awards 1 PE credit for a student/cadet that takes AFJROTC for two consecutive years. 20% of available contact time will be devoted to Wellness instruction.

The fifth course is an elective course (AS-105) in AFJROTC Drill training and competition. Our drill teams are AIA approved and we compete against other Arizona JRTOC competitive drill teams at scheduled drill meets throughout the school year. Cadets can earn a GHS Varsity Letter if selected for one of our drill team components which include Color Guard, Armed Teams, Unarmed Teams, and a Junior Varsity Team.

Students enrolled in any of the four academic/leadership courses receive Vocational Education credit for graduation except for Drill Team which is an Elective credit; as mentioned, two full years of AFJROTC will result in a PE credit toward graduation.

AFJROTC classes meet throughout the school day, depending on the course being taken. The Drill Team in only open to students co-registered in one of the four academic/leadership courses and is offered during "A" hour each day.

Cadets are issued Air Force uniforms and textbooks at no charge. Uniforms are worn one day per week by all cadets.

Prerequisites: The only course that has a prerequisite for enrollment is the fourth year (AS-104) course. Only students who have completed the first three academic/leadership courses are allowed to enroll.  Normally, first year students enroll in the first year (AS-101) course. However, students can enroll in any of the first three courses in any order.

All students enrolled in AFJROTC learn leadership through hands-on experience by being in charge of cadet activities. They also test for promotion during the school year as long as they are academically eligible for promotion.

Activities: The GHS AFJROTC program has many extra-curricular activities for cadets and many activities are family oriented. Some of our many activities include:

Annual Field Trip to Luke Air Force Base

Annual Military Dinner

Marching in the Gilbert Days Parade

School Wide Veterans Day Assembly

Leadership Reaction Course
